During your first visit, I’ll take time to understand your health history, current concerns, and personal goals. I’ll perform a comprehensive orthopedic physical therapy assessment, which may include evaluating your mobility, strength, movement patterns, and other physical measures. If appropriate, I’ll also conduct a pelvic floor assessment, which may involve an internal exam to gently palpate muscles that could be contributing to your symptoms. Based on what we find, I’ll create a personalized home exercise program and outline a plan for future visits tailored to your needs.
For many pelvic and pelvic floor conditions, I may recommend an internal assessment to better understand what’s contributing to your symptoms. This may include visual inspection and palpation of the perineal region, as well as gentle testing of muscles and tissues through the vagina and/or rectum. I take great care to create a professional, safe, and respectful environment—and I always proceed at a pace that feels comfortable for you. You are in control at all times and may pause or decline treatment for any reason. Based on what we find during the assessment, internal treatment may be recommended at future visits, but only with your full consent. I’ll explain everything clearly, including why it’s recommended and what alternatives are available.
Yes. There’s no contraindication for internal pelvic floor therapy during menstruation. If you’d prefer to skip internal work during that time, I’m happy to focus on external techniques—or you’re welcome to reschedule. Just a reminder that I have a 24-hour cancellation policy in place.
As soon as you feel ready. You can begin gentle pelvic floor muscle exercises, breathing exercises, and gentle abdominal exercises immediately postpartum following non-complicated childbirths. If an internal assessment is necessary, this may be performed after being cleared by your OB/midwife at your 6-week postpartum checkup.
